CHAN to Europe: Analyzing Miya’s European Adventure

Having guided Uganda to the 2016 CHAN tournament in Rwanda, Farouk Miya transferred to Belgian club Standard Liege from Ugandan side Vipers SC for 400,000 euros.

His transfer to Europe marked a significant milestone in his career, propelling not only his success but also signaling a pivotal moment for Ugandan football.

Many Ugandans were hopeful as they envisioned his potential participation in prestigious tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.

However, these expectations were subjected to inevitable shortcomings since, given the competitiveness of his position, he had to fight his way into the first team.

With these factors at play, Miya spent the first two seasons of his career in Belgium predominantly on the bench despite having a loan spell at fellow Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron before heading out on another loan spell with Azerbaijani outfit FK Sabail in the 2017/18 season.

While at FK Sabail, Miya recorded 13 appearances with two goals and assists, indicating gradual progression in his game compared to his Belgian stints.

However, his move to the Croatian side HNK Gorica in the 2018/19 season signalized a milestone in his European career as he went on to register 30 league appearances with 5 goals and assists.

It is also in Croatia, where he registered 1,844 minutes of game time, which is the highest in his career so far.

With such impressive performances, Miya drew interest from the Turkish league, which is seemingly more lucrative both personally and career-wise.

In the summer of 2019, Miya signed for Turkish top-tier side Konyaspor at a fee of 1.7 million euros. This was immediately after the AFCON tournament hosted in Egypt during the summer.

It was at Konyaspor where he recorded his best goal-scoring form in the 2019/20 season with 8 goals in 25 league appearances.

Miya, who left fellow Turkish side Caykur Rizespor in the summer of 2024, is currently a free agent.
