Uganda edges past Somalia to keep World Cup hopes alive

The Uganda Cranes earned a very important 2-0 win over Somalia in their 2026 World Cup qualifier at a loud Mandela National Stadium.

Uganda started strong and took an early lead. Allan Okello scored from a penalty kick in just the 6th minute. Then, just before halftime, Jude Ssemugabi scored again by kicking in a rebound from a Steven Mukwala header.

Uganda controlled the game with most of the possession and created many chances to score more, but couldn’t get another goal.

The good news for Uganda didn’t just come from their own game. In another match, Guinea held the strong Algerian team to a 0-0 draw. This result was perfect for Uganda.

Because of this, Uganda keeps its second-place position in the group with 15 points. They are just ahead of Mozambique, who also have 15 points but have a much worse goal difference. Uganda’s is +5, while Mozambique’s is -3.

For Uganda to have a real chance of qualifying for the World Cup, they must win both of their last two games. These will be tough away matches against Botswana on October 6th and Algeria on October 13th.

Coach Paul Put will want to keep his winning team together for these big games, which will also help prepare the team for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

There were also positive points for the team as defender Toby Sibbick had a good official home debut, and Denis Omedi returned to the team after his recent suspension.
