Allan Okello: From Lira’s Dusty Fields to Uganda’s Brightest Hope

Allan Okello: From Lira’s Dusty Fields to Uganda’s Brightest Hope

Born and raised in Lira, a city in the north of Uganda, Okello started off with Lira Destiny Sports Academy, coached by his uncle, then Bob Obira, who’s currently the head coach at Blacks Power FC, which features in the FUFA Big League, Uganda’s second tier.

Okello won the Airtel Rising Star Northern Region with Destiny Sports Academy in 2014.

Having joined Kibuli S.S., “the only school,” in 2012 for his high school, Okello continued responding to football questions by winning the National Post Primary Championship in 2014 and Copa Coca-Cola in 2016.

In February 2017, Okello was unveiled at the Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) stadium in Lugogo.

Okello had previously featured for the KCCA junior team while still studying at Kibuli S.S. prior to his promotion to the senior team.

Okello netted a hat trick and contributed an assist on his debut against Arua-based club Onduparaka at the Philip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on 27 February 2017.

Having featured for KCCA in his first stint between 2017 and 2020, Okello netted 28 goals in 68 appearances.

In January 2020, Okello signed a three-year contract with Algerian side Paradou A.C.

However, in September 2022, Okello signed a one-year loan contract with KCCA, where he went on to play 14 games, winning 6 man-of-the-match awards.

His short spell in Algeria saw him score thrice in thirty-three appearances.

At the end of the season, Okello signed for rivals of his mother club, Vipers SC, in a deal not only worth 30,000 USD but also controversial, as KCCA FC fans claimed he had betrayed them.

However, Okello stated in one of the interviews he did that he felt like his mother club no longer needed his services.

Okello, who’s currently a hot cake in Ugandan football, also began his international career with the Uganda Cranes right from the junior ranks.

He featured for Uganda U-20 at the U-20 COSAFA Tournament held in Zambia in 2017.

He played for Uganda U-23 during the TOTAL AFCON U-23 Qualifiers in 2018 against South Sudan.

But he only made his official national team debut in the December 2019 CECAFA Cup against Somalia, having previously been invited to the national team by then-coach Sebastien Desabre to be part of the final AFCON qualifying game against Tanzania in March 2019.

Having recently scored a banger against Guinea at Namboole during their World Cup qualifying game, Uganda Cranes fans will expect consistency from him ahead of the next CHAN tournament and AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
